City
Kids
New York City is a laboratory for learning. Trips to waterways, parks, museums and
businesses throughout the city are a mainstay of the school curriculum. The Earth
School’s location near Tompkins Square Park provides a unique opportunity for
exploration. Earth School students regularly map the flora, scrutinize the fauna and
climb the monkey bars in this beautifully restored urban wonderland of old-growth
elms and new-growth cultural ideas. When Earth School kids take a boat ride or visit
a botanical garden, they bring their journals for notations, measurements, sketches
and specimens and use this resource material in their class projects. Pre-K/K children
do a bird study; first/second graders investigate waterways and construct their own
bridges; third/fourth graders write, design and produce a puppet show. It’s
all part of the adventure of learning the Earth School way: heads up, hands on, hearts
open. |
